Salient points of speech by Abang Mat Sabu at Stadium Kota Raja

Media onslaught by UMNO

Since 27 Aug, he has been criticised unrelentingly by Utusan Malaysia and on BN controlled TV.  He has been threatened with revocation of citizenship, with jailing under the ISA, and even with being dumped into the South China Sea.  All these just because he said that the attack on the Bukit Kepong police station in 1950, when Malaya was still ruled by the British, was done by independence fighters like Mat Indera who were labelled as terrorists by the British.  The issue has been spinned to portray him and PAS as supporting Communism.

Celebrating true MERDEKA

Very few Jalur Gemiling are flown nowadays, unlike neighbouring countries in the region like India, Thailand, Indonesia when they celebrate their independence day.  When pictures of Tunku Abdul Rahman and Hussein Onn only are put up, and not pictures of other MERDEKA fighters like Dr. Burhanuddin al-Helmy, Ahmad Boestamam, Ishak Haji Muhammad or Pak Sako, Abu Bakar al-Bakr, the rakyat will think the celebration is just by UMNO for UMNO.  The role of the others who had contributed is purposely left out.

What he really said in Tasek Glugor

He had checked the recorded tape of his speech in Tasek Glugor on 21 Aug.  Nothing was mentioned about Communism, just that Mat Indera fought for MERDEKA from British colonialism.  UMNO is now using veteran soldiers to demonstrate against PAS, but PAS is not against soldiers who have done their duty for the country.  PAS’ fight is only against UMNO.  Even under British and UMNO times, it must be remember that there were good people but who worked for the government at that time.  People like Ahmad Nordin, Auditor-General then ACA Director-General, were men of integrity.  Soldiers at that time also served the country well.

The truth about Mat Indera

When he consults the memoirs of Rashid Maidin, Abdullah C.D. and Shamsiah Fakeh for what they had written about Mat Indera, people say those are biased accounts because they were all Communists, but what better way than to discover that UMNO Menteri Besar Johor, Abdul Ghani Othman, had written the foreword to the book “Pengukir Nama Johor” published by the Yayasan Warisan Johor in 1994 describing Mat Indera as a fighter for MERDEKA.

Debate with Khairy Jamaluddin

He disparages the invitation to debate issued by KJ and leaves it to PAS Youth to deal with him.  And there is no need to debate with his equal number in UMNO, DPM Muhyiddin Yassin, because UMNO itself had already admitted in the book endorsed by the UMNO Johor state government that Mat Indera fought for MERDEKA.

History “professor kangkung” serving UMNO

The claim by Zainal Kling that Malaya was never colonised is hilarious.  He, Mat Sabu, refers to a Form 2 history textbook which says the British took over Penang in 1786, then a Form 3 history textbook describes PKMM and API and AWAS.  If there was no colonialisation by Britain, then it is a total waste of time and money for UMNO leaders to celebrate MERDEKA every year since 1957.

Real history of independence struggle

When Pakatan Rakyat takes over Putrajaya, the truth will be revealed and recorded for the rakyat to know.  But the correction of the distortions will not be left to politicians; it will be the work of honest professional historians and academics.

Diversion from the major issue of BERSIH 2.0

PR had obtained 52 % of the popular vote in peninsular Malaysia in the 12th GE in 2008, including 2 % spoilt votes, leaving 46 % for BN.  BN was saved by their “fixed deposits” in Sabah and Sarawak.  UMNO has lost faith in winning back the Chinese and Indian votes, so they purposely stir up the Mat Indera and Communist issue to regain the Malay vote, by accusing PAS of supporting Communism.  UMNO is falling back on their old weapon of playing up issues of race and religion.

Two-faced racial and religious tactic

To the Chinese, UMNO uses MCA to frighten them that voting for DAP is voting for PAS and Islamic state and for “chopping off the top and chopping off the bottom”.  To the Malays, UMNO instigates them to not vote for PAS because PAS is now made use of by DAP, and the Malays will lose political power to the Chinese.

BERSIH 2.0 attracting international attention

The 9 July demonstration was not only held in Kuala Lumpur but in more than 30 other cities around the world, including London, New York, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Melbourne, Auckland, Cairo.  The fight for free and fair elections led by Ambiga Sreenevasan and civil society has highlighted irregularities in the electoral roll and the uneven playing field with government machinery abused by UMNO, the incumbent political party, to the disadvantage of PR.  PAS Selangor has produced a 600-page book to document all the questionable cases of voter registration to pressure SPR.

Democratic countries getting concerned

Recently, the German ambassador called on Mat Sabu, Nurul Izzah and Tan Seng Giaw to attend a meeting in the German embassy for the German government to understand better the 8 demands raised by BERSIH 2.0 for change in the election system.

SPR responsible if GE13 results not accepted by rakyat

SPR cannot deny involvement in taking the side of UMNO, with the top people in SPR exposing themselves in favouring UMNO and facilitating dirty tricks to deny PR a fair chance in a contest against BN.  The rakyat will express their anger through more BERSIHs to come, whether before the GE or even after.

Integrity of PR leaders

The example of Mursyidul Am, Tok Guru Nik Aziz, is well known.  He is revered by the rakyat for selfless service, with him staying in the same wooden house in Pulau Melaka for the 21 years he has been MB of Kelantan.  His modest house is set beside an impressive mosque and madrasah, reflecting the priorities in his life.

Similarly, PAS President Tuan Guru Hadi Awang lives in the same house in Kampung Rusila before and after his one term as MB of Terengganu.

Lim Guan Eng attended Buka Puasa for 25 days in Penang, and Khalid Ibrahim has given free water of 20 cubic metre to every house in Selangor, respecting the basic human right of the rakyat to have access to clean and healthy water supply.

The Orange Book and New Politics

Together, the parties in PR have come up with Buku Jingga which outlines the policies which PR will implement within 100 days of their taking over Putrajaya.

Even Prof. Shamsul Amri has remarked, times have changed, the rakyat is no more the same as they were years ago, but UMNO is stuck with playing the old dirty politics to a more enlightened rakyat.

Defend Selangor

Lastly, the rakyat must rise to defend Selangor and not allow UMNO to retake it.... Ir Oon Eng Hock, Sekretariat Parlimen Kota Raja
