Nik Aziz hopes to Najib

The Kelantan government hopes that Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who will be sworn in as Malaysia's sixth prime minister today, will continue the friendly policy of his predecessor in dealings with the state.

Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat said the prime minister was like a parent to his children in the states. "Pak Lah (Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) was friendly to the state government and gave many things to Kelantan. We hope Najib will follow in his footsteps.

"I will never forget that Pak Lah and Najib visited me when I was undergoing treatment at the National Heart Institute.

"Pak Lah also led me by the hand during the launching of the East Coast Economic Region as he knew that I was not well," he said here yesterday.

The menteri besar said there must be a strong relationship between the state and the federal governments.

"The new government must be seen as friendly and must show the spirit of democracy and federalism. We should not be treated like a stepchild." He was unhappy about the continued presence of the Federal Development Department (JPP) in the state.

"What is the purpose of the JPP as it is not found in other states? "It is as if we are an illegitimate government and not acceptable to the federal government," Nik Aziz said.
